Thank you. I didn't know how to correctly translate that to English or Estonian that why used original language. That is not correct to write just "Policeman" bcs there are not only police rank. So how to translate "Городовой 3-го (старшего) оклада"?Ben kirjutas:ehk siis politseiametnik, eesti keelepruugis tuntud ka kui kardavoi ;o)Venepoeg kirjutas:Городовой 3-го (старшего) оклада.nonn kirjutas:Mis ameti või sõjamehega tegu.Mees täitsa eesti soost.

Was there really "first", "second" and "third" class? I knew they were lower-, medium- and higher salary classes?
Like in Russia also in Estonia there were two types of them - city ones (doesn't matter what type city it was) and country ones - городовой aka kardavoi (kordnik) ja стражник which by some obscure reasons have been commonly in Estonian language named as urjadnik, which is not correct!!
So, in Estonian "kardavoi" is quite commmon and accepted name of those in city. Sometimes "linnavaht" is also used. "Politseiametnik" could be used in popular texts. Off course in special text this is not quite correct, but from otherhand "police" as such is direct translation from Greece word "polis" (city), so gordovoi is also originated from word "город" - city.
Most problematic is situation in country, as in reality урядник (urjadnik) was lowest police rank (чин) and difference between урядник and стражник was that first one had right for pension and latter one had non, but both were off course govermental officials.
On otherhand as long I know городовой in city was really lowest police rank having also right for pension.

That's the same. And this kardavoi has a three "гомба"s on his cords so he is a higher (3rd) salary class kardavoi.Vares kirjutas:Was there really "first", "second" and "third" class? I knew they were lower-, medium- and higher salary classes?
