Mobile saunas are nothing new for the Estonian armed forces. During Estonia’s War of Independence, 1918 – 1920 where the Estonians successfully defended their country from the Russian Bolsheviks and German freebooters, the Estonian Red Cross and the Estonian Railway Administration built an entire sauna train for disinfection and bathing for troops at the front. This sauna train turned out to be a force multiplier for the Estonians as the saunas kept soldiers clean, healthy and in good morale. Typhus spread by lice was a tremendous danger at the time, not only did the sauna cars keep soldiers clean, but their uniforms were steamed too, making them lice free. For the Bolsheviks, poor hygiene conditions led to a mass outbreak of typhus among red troops affecting morale and overall combat power of Bolshevik forces. Disease was perhaps equally as terrifying as bullets and shells for Bolshevik ranks as their medical care was disorganized, minimal or entirely non-existent. White Russian General Nikolai Yudenitch’s Northwest Army was also greatly affected by typhus as well. When Yudenitch’s forces tried to retreat from Petrograd across the Estonian border in vicinity of Narva. Major General Aleksander Tõnisson, commander of the 1st Estonian Division had his men disarm Yudenitch’s troops. As disease carried by these fugitives could ravage the fragile young Estonian republic, Tõnisson had special sanitary squads round up the Russian soldiers and direct them to the saunas. Northwest Army’s medical services were inadequate resulting in the spread of disease and dreadful conditions for the sick and wounded. In the autumn of 1919, their staff did not plan adequately to provide billeting to shelter their personnel from the intense cold that was setting in. A hot sauna was perhaps a wonderful comfort for these men. Major General Tõnisson reflected on the work of the Estonian Red Cross during the War of Independence paying special to their homage to the mobile saunas, "The Estonian Red Cross is a child of war. The Red Cross society brought a just vision and was a blessing for the young state. Soon after the establishment of the Red Cross came well-appointed special hospital trains for transporting the sick and wounded from the battlefield to hospitals. The Tapa and Narva railway stations opened Red Cross canteens and the visit the sauna trains to front line units were much appreciated.”
